Does anyone have recent experience with the Chicago office of Consulate of India for passport renewal. How long does it take? 2 weeks, 3 weeks, more than 3 weeks.
I went there in 2005 for renewing my friends passport. UPS lost his passport and VISA in transit. We were very pleased with the process.
We went to the office in downtown, reached at about 9 am. They were pretty quick to take the required documents and within 1 hr everything was done and we left the place.
Came back at 3:30 pm to collect the passport. Visa was stamped correctly. They made us wait for 1.5 hrs and called our name. We took the passport and drove back.
Let me know if you have any questions.

My honest suggestion. If you already have a technical degree (BE) it is better to go for business degree. Future is great for people with technical and business skills regardless which country you are in.

That's useful to know thought it was just mine that was taking forever. My PWD request was submitted January 27th. 9 weeks later still waiting. Should I just wait in the hope that my company's lawyer is keeping track and knows to submit another PWD request?

I think the labor certification is slowing going back to 2 years approval time including PWD. 3-6 months for PWD and 1 year to 2.5 years for Labor.

Literally, windsor(Canada) and Detroit (USA) are seperated by river, so keeping GC and PR is like riding in two boats ... not possible. While Canadians are liberal in allowing their immigrants to travel daily into US to conduct their jobs ( that brings easy tax $$), it would be inconvienent to track daily movements out of country for GC. Remember at US citizenship, you will be asked to provide detailed log of trvels outside the country. So trip to Windsor is technically outside the country.
I had Canadian PR and am giving it up, because I finally got GC. With GCI can trvel freely into Canada. Plus even before Canadian PR, I never lived in Canada nor do I plan to in future. So why bother.
You did the right thing. I know a friend of mine who got their GC though they had Canada PR. They made it a point to officially surrender the PR.
Because they wanted no mess-up with the GC. Keeping a Canada PR conflicts with the intent of living in US permanently (needed to maintain GC).
Most people dont realize that GC is not the end of story. GC is yet another type of
immigration status and one can lose that as well. In the post Sep11 round-up a lot of people have lost or went close to losing their GC when US govt did a massive crackdown on immigrants.

Hello Friends,
My current passport is expiring in Jun 07. I have applied for passport renewal at Indian Embassy (Washington D.C.) in 3rd week of Jan 07 via courier. I may have to travel urgently to India by end of this month. Just wondering if anyone recently got their passport renewed at DC and what was the duration. It will help me to take the decision about departure date. Unfortunately DC is 5 hours drive from where I live. I am not sure even if take a day off and drive to DC to collect the passport they will even give it to me on the same day. Multiple attempts to contact DC office via phone/email were not helpful. No one picks the phone and their voice mail system is always full. Any advise on what I should to do know status of my passport renewal would be appreciated.

We understand that USA is currently facing more pressing issues at this time which need your imminent attention but few simple reliefs from your administration will make the lives of immigrants much better here. As a result, they will contribute more towards the economy, buy houses, invest and establish new businesses.
Suggestions for relief to immigrant community:
1. Approve pending bill HR5882 which captures wasted Green card numbers from the past due to bureacracy delays.
2. Remove Same or Similar job requirements for Green card applicants waiting for more than 1 year in their I-485( Last stage of GreenCard). They should be allowed to join any employer with any title or salary changes.

tries to alleviate this process and mandate the FBI to perform this in
a reasonable timeframe without limiting US Security.
following is an exceprt of this.
"...Act to limit the timeframe of the FBI name check and background
check. We ask of the honorable members of the Congress and Senate to
approve Senator Obama's Act in its entirety and facilitate the
feasibility of it. As the security of this country is considered a
priority, it is important that the adequate budget and resources are
devoted to the security checks ..."
This sounds like a good initiative to help out all of us that finally end up making in I-485. Suggest we rally all IV members to sign this petition:

Mike Huckabee is fast emerging as the leading Republican Presidential Candidate, and has a commanding lead in Iowa.
While all other leading Repub contenders: McCain, Guiliani, Romney and Thompson, have expressed support for strengthening and increasing high skilled immigration, not much was known about Huckabee as he was in State Government previously.

I agree, a good "cheat" is a spray bottle of water on your belt...... makes them look way better in all sorts of conditions.
Also if you're going to have a lot of clusters, get the angle so they merge more, and saturate the final output more to give it oomph

Last week out of a project..my desi consultancy sent me a termination notice(on H1 with this guy). 485 filed in July 2007. got EAD. I am looking for a project right now. Planning to join on EAD and look for a job.
What are my options? I am in status?

u r in status of pending-AOS. So if you forget about H1 for new job and take it up on EAD, you are all set.
If you try to do H1 transfer and the gap from now to tha ttransfer is a lot, then they might not extend the H1 status and you'll need to leave and re-enter the US.

Funny that this lawyer is Ok with transferring H-1b, but does not want to accept an EAD. .
It's obvious. This lawyer wants to make money for applying H1-b (transfer ~ $5000 typically). If you use EAD he gets zilch.:D:D:D:D:D:D
